Pedro Afonso Garcia Gonçalves
Pedro Gonçalves, originally born in the sun-soaked region of Algarve, Portugal, found his musical calling in the quieter surroundings of Castelo Branco, his parent’s hometown, to where he moved at seven years old. Introduced to music at a young age, he initially tried his luck at the guitar before gravitating towards the environment of a marching band’s music program at eight. By ten, he enrolled in the Regional Conservatory of Music of Castelo Branco, where he began learning the violin alongside his amateur exploration of the euphonium.
Pedro’s dedication and talent flourished under the guidance of Nicolas Ramirez Celis, a mentor whose influence would shape his musical trajectory for years to come. Over the course of eight years, Pedro diligently pursued his studies, culminating in the attainment of his 8th-grade certification in music, alongside the European High School Diploma.
Eager to further his musical education and expand his horizons, Pedro set his sights on the United Kingdom. With the passion for performance, he secured a place at the esteemed Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Under the mentorship of tutors such as Lesley Hatfield, the distinguished leader of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Pedro immersed himself in a rigorous four-year Bachelor’s program in Music Performance.
Throughout his years at RWCMD, Pedro had the privilege of collaborating with renowned musicians, including Carmine Lauri, Rachel Podger, Lucy Gould, the Consone Quartet, among others. His dedication to his craft and his musicianship garnered him a big network within the musical community in both Portugal and the UK.
Even as he pursued his studies, Pedro was drawn to the art of teaching, sharing his passion for the violin with eager learners. His role as a violin and music tutor allowed him to impart his knowledge and skills to aspiring musicians, fostering a new generation of talent. Presently, he continues to inspire and educate at South Powys Music Youth, nurturing young minds and nurturing a love for music. He currently also works at Cardiff Sixth Form College where with the help of other fellow musicians founded an orchestra for the first time in the college, giving an opportunity for students to enjoy making music again.
As an orchestral freelance musician, Pedro has been a fixture in ensembles like the Sinfonietta de Castelo Branco (Portugal) and the Orquestra sem Fronteiras (Portugal) for over five years. Pedro was also leader of the Portuguese Youth Orchestra and consequently selected for the season 23/24 with projects as a Soloist and concerts in Berlin (Germany) and Kassel (Germany) part of the Young Euro Classic Festival. People have seen him perform with a variety of youth, semi-professional, and professional freelance groups, orchestras, and ensembles, leaving an indelible mark on his career.
Pedro’s passion for the baroque violin is a testament to his eclectic musical interests. As a fixture in freelance baroque ensembles in the UK, notably the Noxwode Ensemble (United Kingdom), he has explored this world of the music industry, having exciting experiences experiences, even gracing the presence of members of the British royal family.
Looking ahead, Pedro’s schedule for the 2024 season includes performances with chamber groups, chamber orchestras and symphonic orchestra in Portugal, United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany. Notably, including his debut with the Orquestra do Algarve.
